A friend reached out after going through something devastating from a choice she made under pressure. She said she wanted to share something, but she waited to do it in person. As we sat down I immediately let her know there’s no judgment here at all, and she started to share. I felt a heaviness settle in the room, took a deep breath and asked her quietly, "Did you break the covenant?"
She said no, and wanted to understand more. I explained that through a spiritual lens, what she did was not just a personal decision here on earth, it holds spiritual consequences. Scripture shows that the shedding of innocent blood (or sacrifices) has been tied to covenant-formation since the beginning of time. It’s still happening to this day with abortions. What the world may frame as a necessary choice for some can still open a door in the unseen that needs to be closed the right way, by turning completely away from our sins and inviting Jesus Christ of Nazareth in. These are the things the Bible speaks about when it says, my people perish for lack of knowledge. So I asked if she was truly ready for a different life path, because God works with a surrendered heart. She assured me that she’d done everything else in her own effort and ways, and it only led to destruction. She only wanted God. Her soul was crying out for Him, and I was happy to walk her through such a vulnerable process😭🙏🏽
What started as a simple conversation turned into prayer, repentance and deep deliverance. We walked through and uprooted strongholds and patterns that had been carried throughout generations. One by one, she placed them under the authority of Jesus Christ, trusting in the finished work of the cross. We are redeemed by the blood He shed, and through Him we are brought into a new covenant, the only one that truly covers, cleanses, and restores.
That really is what real community looks like. Standing close enough that when someone is ready to step into the light, they are not alone.
The next time we met she broke all spiritual ties from her past connections while surrounded by worship music. From her mouth to God’s ears, as I walked around praying in agreement for her freedom. After all was settled, she said something that stayed with me. She told me she just could not understand why my partner and I had been so patient with her over the years that we have known her, even when her habits did not line up with the values we personally hold. She admitted that she feels disgusted by her old ways🥺. She finds herself wanting distance from others that are in sin, so she could not understand why we never seemed to carry that same aversion toward her.
I was shocked to hear that. I didn't really have an answer. That's just the love of God.
When His Spirit starts to change your heart, the way you see people changes too. In the beginning of your walk, distance may be very necessary while you get rooted. But over time, when you are grounded in Christ, you start to see the soul of the person instead of the sin. Heaven rejoices when one person repents. My eyes filled with tears watching her put her past life through the fire🔥
If you are someone who is seeking freedom from your past mistakes, know that you are not stuck where you fell. When you decide to turn back to the Lord, to confess honestly, and to place your life under His authority, things that once held you do not have to stay. Scripture says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:7–8)
Read into biblical teaching on repentance and freedom in Christ, especially when dealing with agreements you may have entered knowingly or unknowingly. Learn what Scripture says about confession, forgiveness, and the authority we have through Jesus. Take time to pray through these things before the Lord, and if needed, seek guidance from another believer you trust who can pray with you and stand with you as you bring those areas into the light. tThrough Jesus Christ, no past is stronger than the covenant you enter with Him.
I have no greater desire than to see His people set free.
Thank you, Lord, for the eyes to see, and the humility to come before you.
