A friend reached out after going through something devastating from a choice she made under pressure. She said she wanted to share something, but waited until we could meet in person. As we sat down I immediately let her know there’s no judgment here at all, and she opened up.
As she spoke, I felt a heaviness settle in the room. I took a breath and asked her quietly, Did you break the covenant?
She said no, and wanted to understand more. I explained that through a spiritual lens, what she did was not just a personal decision here on earth, it holds spiritual consequences. The shedding of innocent blood (or sacrifices) has been tied to covenant-formation since the beginning of time. It’s still happening to this day with abortions. What the world may frame as a necessary choice for some can still open a door in the unseen that needs to be closed the right way, by turning fully away from sin and coming back under the authority of Jesus Christ. These are the things the Bible speaks about when it says, my people perish for lack of knowledge. So I asked if she was ready for sure to come out of agreement, because it would require surrender and turning away from certain habits. She assured me that she’d done everything else in her own effort and ways, which has only led to destruction. Her soul was crying out for God, and I was happy to walk her through such a vulnerable process😭🙏🏽
What started as a conversation turned into prayer and deliverance. We walked through and uprooted strongholds and patterns that had been carried throughout generations. One by one, she placed them under the authority of Jesus Christ, trusting in the finished work of the cross. We are redeemed by the blood He shed. It's that covenant that truly covers, cleanses, and restores.
When we met again, she took another step. In a space filled with worship, she began to release what was tied to her through her past connections, speaking openly before God, while I prayed in agreement with her. After all was settled, she said something that stayed with me. She told me she could not understand why my partner and I had been so patient with her over the years, even when her habits did not align with the values we hold. She admitted that she currently feels a strong disgust to her old ways, and finds herself wanting distance from anything that looks the same. She could not understand why we never seemed to carry that same aversion toward her.
I was shocked to hear that. I didn't really have an answer, but that's just the love of God.
When His Spirit begins to change your heart, the way you see people changes. At the beginning of your walk, distance may be necessary while you become rooted. But over time, as you grow in your identity in Christ, you begin to see the person in front of you differently. You begin to see beyond the sin, and recognize the soul in bondage. My eyes filled with tears watching her lay her past down before the Lord, through the fire🔥.
If you are someone seeking freedom from your past, confess honestly, and bring your life under His authority. "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." (James 4:7–8).
Read into biblical teaching on repentance and freedom in Christ, especially when dealing with agreements you may have entered unknowingly. Learn what the Word teaches about confession, forgiveness, and the authority we have through Jesus. Take time to bring these things before the Lord in prayer, and if needed, seek guidance from a believer you trust who can pray with you and stand with you as you bring everything into the light. Growth often happens over time as the Lord continues His work in us, revealing and restoring areas step by step. Through Jesus Christ, no past is stronger than the new covenant you are brought into through Him.
I have no greater desire than to see His people set free. Thank you, Lord, for the eyes to see, and the humility to lay it all before you.
Colossians 1:13–14
"He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."
Colossians 2:13–15
"He forgave us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us… This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame."
1 John 1:7–9
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us… and to cleanse us from all unrighteousne
